IMAGE DESCRIPTION:

When this topic was announced, I had just come back from a holiday in the
Maldives (Kani Island), where I sent a lot of time snorkeling, so this shows a
typical scene from underwater there.

DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED:

The sea is a transparent plane with a ripple normal, with caustics added. I
wasn't happy with the effects of using fog (its probably too linear) so the
distance shading was done using a sequence of planes each of which had lower
transparency, and darker colours than its predecessor. Each has a crand added
on to show the particles in the water. This had the added bonus of making the
sun's rays visible in the water.

The corals are a mixture of blobs, and scaled spheres arranged at random.

The fish really are the colours shown here. They have been matched from photos I
took (a few of these are in the zip file)

All the fish were modelled using Spatch.

Blue fish - Blue Sturgeon approx 15-20 cms long. One of the more common larger
fish but usually solitary.

Black / white fish - Humbug Damselfish approx 2-5 cms. These were everywhere and
lived in clouds of about 20 fish.

Orange fish - Clownfish approx 5-7 cms. These stayed within the big purple
anemomes. About 2 or 3 per anemome.

Yellow fish - Long Nosed Butterflyfish. I only saw one of these and managed to
get a photo of it !
