IMAGE DESCRIPTION:

Stillness on an otherwise festive day (the winter festival, perhaps). Two
friends engage in a Chinese tea ceremony, which tends to focus more on the tea
than the ceremony. Perhaps ceremony is not their thing. The girl on the left is
apparently more in tune with modernity, while her friend has opted for a more
traditional, albeit plain, kimono for the festival day. Despite the
accelerating divide between the past and the present, many customs still bring
together the new and the old.

DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED:

Background: a photo I took several years ago in Taiwan, set several thousand
units away (equivalent to 0.25 to 0.5 miles).

Room: the room is primarily composed of cube primitives, with the door frame,
railing, and some other things made from translational sweeps.

Painting: the painting itself was painted by my friend Josephine Huang (no
relation), and scanned in (with permission). the frame was made from a
rotational sweep with 4 export divisions and set in a group so I could scale it
correctly. matting made from cube primitives.

Tatamis: made from superQ's, textured and normaled with pigmented tiles with
gradients nested inside. it looks best within the focal range of the camera, it
seems.

Tea set: primarily made from rotational sweeps, with handles and spouts from
bezier patches. modeled after a TenRen purple clay tea set.

Table: superQ legs, top is grouped + scaled 4-export-region rot sweep.

People: both girls are derived from identical models, the only differences being
hair style, face image map (+eyelash placement to match),and clothing. most
pieces are composed of bezier patch, withsphere joints, in a hierarchical
grouping/csg. (posable, ik-able, down to the fingertips). clothing also made
from patch with sphere joints. tight clothing (shirts, pants) tend to be more
easily posable.

31 total textures, 7 of which involve image maps.
Post-render adjustments: +10% brightness, +30 ontrast.
Camera focal blur sure does make rendering slow.
