IMAGE DESCRIPTION:

This steam-crane was designed by J. Campbell Evans for use on
board steam-vessels. The crane is worked by a single oscillating
cylinder.
The boiler is placed as close as possible to the crane and revolves
with it, The boiler has lugs for attaching the tension-rods of the
crane-arm.
The bed-plate upon which the boiler and crane are placed is fixed
to the foundation plate by a centre bolt.
There are rollers running on the foundation plate, this plate is
solidly embedded on timber laid on the deck of the vessel.
There are two pairs of wheels and pinions for varying the speed
of the chain-barrel. the crane can be moved round either way using
the bevel-wheels.

DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED:

The crane was modelled in rhinoceros and then exported to moray
to apply textures and to build the scene. Most of the pieces of the
crane were made joining simple revolution surfaces and filleting
edges. I used polar arrays of boxes to make the wheels and a
extruded curve to make the bed-plate.
